Diamondback Overdrive Expert

I've been shopping on and off for a 29'er for the better part of one year. After nearly settling on a Trek, I came across the Diamondback Overdrive. The Expert model bridges the gap between the entry `V' Model and the higher end versions (Pro, Comp). I am roughly 6'3'' depending on which convenience shop I'm walking out of. The XL 22" version fits like a glove, not too small and not too large.Included with the Expert model are better components such as disc brakes, Wellgo forged pedals, Shimano M310 Rapid Fire shifters, Tektro brake levers and an upgraded cassette with quality front & rear derailleur's.My first impression of the bike was the excellent craftsmanship. The aluminum frame, while Chinese in origin, has seamless welds and a beautiful anodized finish. The entire unit is very lightweight and easy to maneuver while riding. The SR Suntour XCT V3 is smooth operating and comes with the added features of a preload adjuster and mechanical lock out. This is perhaps one of the better front suspensions available in the $500-1,000 price range.The shifters are impressive. The fact that you can downshift three gears with one squeeze allows for quick adjustments while approaching a hill. You will not find the shifters on a competition bike, but they work well enough for normal trail riding.The WTB Wolverine tires ensure that the overdrive is at home on both the trail and the road. The tire pattern is aggressive, but I would venture to say that it would not be my first choice for thick mud. From my experiences, the tire works flawlessly on pavement, packed dirt, loose gravel and through minor brush.The Hayes HMX-5 brakes are good for recreational riding, but do not provide sufficient stopping power for spirited riding. This is the only component on the bike that I may consider replacing a couple years from now.Overall, the Diamondback Overdrive Expert is a solid performer that is built well. This bike is THE choice if you are shopping in the $500-1,000 dollar range. You would be hard pressed to find another company offering a similar spec sheet of components for $500.
