Melon Bicycles 5005239 Slice 20" Folding Bicycle, Red
Product Description
Melon Bicycles 5005239 Slice 20" Folding Bicycle, Red is made from lightweight 7005 aluminum and is easy to put in and out of the trunk, carry into the office or classroom, or store in the apartment closet. The seat is comfortable but firm, allowing you to stay in the saddle as long as you like. The rear mounted kickstand is out of the way but convenient for those moments when you actually have to stop riding. High quality rims and high-powered V-brakes round out the package. The slice is designed with an extra large front chainring that provides the gear ratios necessary to conquer any terrain with only 8 gears. Melon believes that for most people, 24 or 27 gears are completely unnecessary and just get in the way of your enjoyable riding experience. The SRAM MRX Pro grip shifter makes shifting completely intuitive and fun; you click the grip away from you to go to the next higher gear and towards you to go to the next lower gear. The large numerical display by the hand grip lets you see what gear you are in at a glance. Melon designed the slice as the 20" wheel, easily transported alternative to conventional comfort, hybrid, fitness, and commuting bikes. An upright riding position makes for an enjoyable day in the saddle. Did we mention that you will never need to wrestle with a bike rack again? - but that is just the start, wait until you ride it. You'll soon think of the slice as a bike that folds, not a folding bike. If you are ready for some serious fun, the slice folding bike is the one for you.

I did a lot of research -- and this bike is just great! I am a recreational (15 - 25 mile rides with a more senior group) rider -- and have been riding both a hybrid and a road bike depending on terrain. I have wanted a more portable solution for trips where bike rack security and hassles are a concern -- and this is the ticket.Components are a step up from most folding bikes -- and it is priced right. The larger crank with 8 speeds makes for a good blend. I'll know more when I get a bike computer installed -- but think that the 12+ mph pace for group rides should be quite easy. Hill climbing should be OK, while gears are not as low as my hybrid -- the light weight will be an offset. For more casual touristy stuff -- perfect! Riding is a treat -- between acceleration, maneuverability and a mostly upright posture.Build quality is very good. It should be -- initial list price on this was $599. Criticisms are few - not quite as small a fold as some others; only a special seat-post rack works and needs to come off for a fold unless you keep the seat / post / rack together and separate from the bike. I plan to get by with a seat bag and small frame bag -- and 90% of the time that's enough. Tires, a place where money is well-spent -- are Kenda's -- a future upgrade opportunity. Also, fenders are an extra. The brand name carry bag is pricey -- see CampingWorld for a more economical fix.It looks like they have changed the frame and some components for 2012. The list price dropped -- so some caution advised. However the quality still looks to be good on the new one. (The Amazon model & others still available on-line, appear to be a 2011 -- see the difference in the "triangle" for the rear wheel.) They did add braze-ons for mounts (but still uncertain on a conventional rack).

I commented in Mark Coffee-Drinker's review. Please read my addition to his posting. But, to sum it up, I luv this bike. But, due to really bad road conditions on my ride to work, my wife will be using it mostly.Still, compared to a Dahon or the horrible Giordano (Kent) folding bike, this is THE folding bike to purchase. 5 stars!!!

I wanted a slice because of the foldability and the name brand components. This POS ships with Cstar chinese brakes, not the nice shimano's as advertised. One of the pedals I had to crossthread to get to stay because of a design flaw. Skip this one... Maybe try ordering direct from Melon... Maybe...
